When it comes to skincare, transitioning from summer to fall can be a bit tricky. We’re not quite dealing with the harsh temperatures and dry air of winter (which can take a toll on the complexion), but there are still some seasonal changes that can affect the skin. If you want to keep your skin healthy and radiant as we move into the new season, here are our top skincare tips for fall.
1. Hydration is Key
As the weather starts to get a bit cooler (and as we spend more time cozying up in heated rooms), our skin’s hydration levels can decline. In order to keep your complexion soft and healthy, you need to focus on hydration – both inside and out!
In addition to staying on top of your water intake, try adding a hydrating hyaluronic acid serum to your daily skincare routine. Hyaluronic acid draws water into the skin, restoring hydration levels for a super smooth and supple complexion. For the best results, apply it to damp skin. This helps maximize the hydration benefits!
2. SPF for Fall
While you may not be spending quite as much time in the sun, your skin is still prone to damage from UVA and UVB rays. Even when it’s dark and cool outside, many of these rays are still able to penetrate through the clouds and affect the skin. Over time, damage from the sun can lead to dark spots, decreased elasticity, more permanent fine lines, and other signs of aging.
With that in mind, continue wearing sunscreen on a daily basis to shield your skin against the sun’s harmful rays. At minimum, use an SPF 30 sunscreen.
3. Gentle Cleansing
Cleansing daily is essential for washing away impurities that can lead to dullness, breakouts, irregular texture, and other visible issues. However, more stripping formulas can feel harsh on the skin, especially as the temperatures drop and the skin becomes more prone to dryness.
This fall, keep your complexion clean but comfortable with a gentle cleanser. Those that tend to be oilier may reach for a mild foaming cleanser, while those with dry and/or sensitive skin can benefit from a hydrating cream cleanser.
4. Exfoliate Wisely
One of the best ways to banish dullness is exfoliation – but you need to make sure you don’t overdo it. Over-exfoliating your skin can harm the barrier, leading to redness, irritation, dryness, and other signs of aggravation.
Depending on your skin’s tolerance and the strength of the formula you’re using, use a chemical exfoliant around one to three times per week to clear away dead skin cells and renew your complexion. Alternatively, you can try using a mild physical scrub to manually buff your skin.
5. Lip Care
The lips are incredibly delicate, and can be especially prone to dryness and cracking as the temperatures drop and the environment becomes drier. Ensure you’re properly taking care of them by applying a balm on a regular basis. You may also consider layering a petroleum-based ointment on top of your balm to really seal it in. We also recommend trying a weekly lip mask to bring moisture back to your lips.
6. Nourishing Face Serums
Serums are the most effective tools for helping you achieve and maintain glowing, radiant skin. These powerhouses are packed with high concentrations of ingredients that target your skin concerns.
If you aren’t already using a vitamin C serum, try adding one to your routine this fall. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that protects the skin against harmful free radicals as it brightens the complexion and lessens visible signs of aging. Everyone can also benefit from daily use of a CoQ10 serum. This gentle multitasking ingredient will help replenish skin cells and shield the skin against damage while firming, smoothing, and softening the look of fine lines and wrinkles.
7. Invest in a Humidifier
A humidifier is a game changer for the skin – especially if you’re regularly running the heater in your home. Heating systems remove humidity from the air, which can lead to dull and uncomfortably dehydrated skin. By using a humidifier in your home, you can add moisture back into the air. Paired with a good skincare routine, this simple change in your environment can lead to soft and supple skin.
8. Autumn-Friendly Diet
The foods we eat play a major role in keeping our skin not only strong and nourished, but also glowy. Thankfully, there are plenty of excellent nutrient-dense foods that are in season in the fall!
For example, let’s look at one of the go-to fall fruits: apples. They are loaded with antioxidants that protect against free radicals, as well as B vitamins, which can help repair damage, promote a radiant and clear complexion, and more. Some other in-season fruits and vegetables that are especially great for the skin include carrots, cranberries, beets, cauliflower, and pumpkins.
